Your puppy’s diet is very flexible. However, as outlined below, the BULK of his/her diet must be raw, meaty bones, comprising 60% to 80% of the diet.
If you have not already done so, purchase one of the following books: “Give Your Dog A Bone” or “The BARF Diet” by Dr. Ian Billinghurst. These can be purchased at most dog shows from vendors, or go to the internet source,
http://www.dogwise.com and type in keyword, “Billinghurst” under authors.
The diet outlined below is just a part of what is available to feed your dog. The ingredients listed here are the most important, but it’s important for you to understand why certain things in this diet are important and what options are available to you under certain situations.
If you follow this feeding plan, you will probably have many, happy, disease and allergy free years with your pet. If you choose to take the easy way out and feed kibble (dog food), you will spend much less time understanding your dog’s needs and tending to them, but you may have to pay the price in veterinary expenses, and your poor pet will certainly pay the eventual price in lost health.
I have an ear open for any and all problems related to your dog, but I’m MUCH more sympathetic to someone who is attempting to do the best for his/her pet than I am for someone who is looking for the easiest way to accomplish maintaining an animal.
This diet does not guarantee good health. However, thousands of people, all over the world, have been feeding this regime for 3 to 5 generations of dogs, and they’ve found that adhering to Dr. Billinghurst’s ideas have given them a MUCH reduced incidence of cancer, auto-immune diseases, orthopedic problems, allergies, epilepsy, heart problems, and so on. Along with the decrease in problems arising, older dogs switched to this diet have increased energy levels, reduction in existing problems, including arthritic dogs being able to be taken off Rimadyl and other arthritis anti-inflammatory or pain medications with possible dangerous side effects.
So, while I don’t DEMAND your feeding the puppy this way, nor could I enforce it if I did demand it, I strongly encourage you to, at least, investigate with an open mind the possibility that this method of feeding is far and away superior to “dog food”. I also ask you to question the intentions of anyone of authority who tries to dissuade you from persisting with this diet. (Are they selling dog food?) If you must feed dog food, locate one that is grain free, since we are relatively certain that grains are a primary source of canine allergies. One brand of dog food that is grain free is Nature's Variety "Raw Instinct". They also make frozen raw patties and medallions, as well as freeze dried raw foods. |
